Usos de “some” / “any” y sus compuestos

Para los que hablamos español es un poco difícil entender el uso de los pronombres indefinidos si no tenemos en cuenta que algunos, por no decir muchos, de los sustantivos que nosotros consideramos contables para los hablantes de la lengua inglesa son incontables. Además muchas veces ni siquiera los usamos. Por lo que hay que estar muy  atento.

Otro problema que nos encontraremos es que a la hora de traducir nuestras frases nos damos cuenta que nosotros ni siquiera usamos esas palabras en nuestra lengua materna, mientras que los hablantes de lengua inglesa lo usan en la mayoría de las ocasiones. Esto es así,  que le vamos a hacer así que a por ellos , poco a poco os acostumbrareis a su uso.

"No hay leche en la nevera"

There is not any milk in the fridge.

"Necesito ayuda."

I need some help.

 

Some y any se utilizan cuando no se sabe el número exacto de algo o no es relevante y por supuesto con aquellos sustantivos incontables que como bien dice su nombre no se pueden contar.

Tal y como os he repetido en clase muchas veces ”some”  y “any” se utiliza con sustantivos contables plural y con sustantivos incontables. SOME se utiliza en oraciones afirmativas y ANY en oraciones negativas e interrogativas. Sin embargo podemos encontrar “some” en oraciones interrogativas cuando se trata de una peticion o un ofrecimiento.

He aquí algunos ejemplos:

I have got some books (contable plural)

Tengo algunos libros.

There are some cats under that tree.(contable plural)

Hay algunos gatos debajo de aquel árbol.

I bought some new skirts. (plural contable)

Me compré unas faldas nuevas.

There are some oranges on the table. (contable plural afirmativa)

Hay algunas naranjas sobre la mesa.

There were some kids in the park. (contable plural / afirmativa)

Había algunos niños en el parque.

She has some friends in Valencia. (contable plural/ afirmativa)

Ella tiene algunos amigos en Valencia

There aren´t any cats under that tree. (contable plural / negativo)

No hay ningún gato debajo de aquel árbol.

She hasn’t got any friends. (contable plural / negativa)

Ella no tiene amigos./ Ella no tiene ningún amigo.

There aren’t any good films on TV. (Negación en plural.)

No hay películas buenas en la televisión./ No hay ninguna pelicula

buena en televisión.

Are there any cats under that tree? (contable plural / interrogativa)

¿Hay algún gato debajo de aquel árbol?

Have you got any brothers or sisters?(contable plural / interrogativa)

¿Tienes hermanos o hermanas?

 Do you have any children? (Pregunta en plural.)

¿Tienes hijos? 

Are there any good restaurants near here? (Pregunta en plural.)

¿Hay algún buen restaurante cerca de aquí?

 Como podréis ver todos estos ejemplos hacen referencia a los sustantivos contables plural. 

Ahora observa los siguientes ejemplos con sustantivos incontables:

There is some water in the bottle. (sustantivo incontable / afirmativa)

Hay  (algo de ) agua en la botella.

I need some help. (sustantivo incontable / afirmativa)

Necesito (algo de ) ayuda.

There is not any water in the bottle . (sustantivo incontable / negativa) 

No hay agua en la botella.

There is some milk in the fridge. (incontable)

Hay  (algo de )leche en la nevera.

There isn’t any beer in the fridge.

No hay cerveza en la nevera.

Is there any water in the bottle? (sustantivo incontable / negativa)

¿Hay agua en la botella?

I haven’t got any money.(sustantivo incontable /negativa)

No tengo dinero.

Have you got any milk? (sustantivo incontable /interrogativa)

¿Tienes  (algo de )leche?

We haven’t got any milk.(sustantivo incontable / interrogativa)

No tenemos leche .

I’d (would) like to learn English, but I don’t have any free time.

Me gustaría aprender inglés , pero no tengo tiempo libre.

También se usa some  en los ofrecimientos y las peticiones en las oraciones interrogativas en vez de “any”. Normalmente se espera una respuesta afirmativa a la pregunta o petición.

Would you like some orange juice? 

¿Te apetece (algo de) zumo de naranja?

Do you want some soup?

¿Quieres  sopa?

Would you like some cheese?

¿Te apetece queso?

Would you like some oranges?

¿Te apetecen naranjas?

Could you lend me some books to read?

¿Podrías prestarme algunos libros para leer?

Could I have some more rice?

¿Podría tomar más arroz?

Could you give me some help with this?

¿Podrias ayudarme con esto?

Can I borrow some money?

¿Me prestas dinero?

Can I borrow some books?

¿Me prestas algun libro?

Can I have some more milk?

¿Puedo tomar mas leche?

Can I have some biscuits, please?

¿Puedo coger mas galletas , por favor?

Would you please give me some oranges?

¿Podría darme algunas naranjas, por favor?

 

También puedes ofrecer algo con some y el imperativo:

You look hungry. Have some biscuits.

Pareces hambriento.Toma algunas galletas

Have some soup… it’s delicious!

Toma (algo de) sopa, esta deliciosa

If you’re thirsty, drink some water.

Si tienes sed , bebe agua.

También podemos usar  any en oraciones afirmativas las cuales tienen un significado negativo, A menudo se usa  “any” con “hardly” (a penas), “without” (sin) o “never (nunca).

There’s hardly any milk left in the fridge – we need to go to the supermarket.

A penas queda leche en la nevera, necesitamos ir al supermercado.

Jane went out without any money .

Jane salió sin dinero.

I  never have  any problems with my computer .

Nunca tengo problemas con mi ordenador.

Podemos usar “some” y “any” al final de la oración, como pronombres.

“Do you need any money?” -¿Necesitas dinero?
“No, thanks  I have  got some.” (some = some money)

No , gracias tengo algo.

“Who ate all the sweets?” ¿Quién se comió todos los caramelos?
“Not me. I haven’t had any.” (any = any sweets)

Yo no. No he cogido ninguno.

Cómo usar “any” para hablar de “cualquier cosa”

También se puede usar la palabra any  con el significado  “it doesn´t matter which” (no importa cuál).

 

-Which bus should I take to get to the airport?

¿Qué autobús debo coger para ir al aeropuerto?

- Any bus. They all go there.

cualquier autobús . Todos van allí

 

- What kind of beer do you want?

¿Qué clase de cerveza quieres?

- Any kind is fine. 

Cualquier tipo esta bien.

 

-Let´s go somewhere to have a snack.

Vamos a algún lugar a tomar un aperitivo.

- Where?- ¿Dónde?

- Anywhere, I don´t mind.- Cualquier lugar, no me importa.

Something, anything, somewhere, anywhere, someone /anyone:

Estos compuestos de some y any siguen las mismas reglas .

Something : Algo                       Anything: Nada, 

Someone/ somebody: Alguien Anyone: Nadie

Somewhere: Algún lugar           Anywhere: Ningún lugar

Recuerda que todas estos compuestos de "some" y "any" hacen referencia a ambos géneros llevan el verbo en singular, ya que se consideran sustantivos singular pero usaremos pronombres y adjetivos posesivos en plural.

They didn´t do any exercises because nobody had brought the book with them.

Ellos no hicieron ningún ejercicio porque nadie habia traido el libro con ellos.

Someone is here waiting for you

Alguien está aquí esperándote.

Muy a menudo se usan los pronombres they/them/their después de estas palabras.

Someone has forgotten their jacket.(=his or her jacket)

Alguien ha olvidado su chaqueta.

If anybody needs my help, they can ask me anytime (=he or she can)

Si alguien necesita mi ayuda puede preguntarme a cualquier hora.

Somebody, someone, something and somewhere se usan en oraciones afirmativas y también en oraciones interrogativas cuando se trata de un ofrecimiento o una petición.

Anybody, anyone, anything and anywhere se usa en oraciones negativas e interrogativas. Aunque a veces pueden aparecer en oraciones afirmativas cuando hacen referencia a “cualquiera”  , es decir cuando es indiferente la cosa , persona o lugar.

I need to find somewhere to study.

Necesito encontrar algún lugar para estudiar

Is there anywhere to buy a newspaper?

¿Hay algún lugar para comprar un periódico?

I didn’t know anybody at the meeting.

No conocía a nadie en la reunión.

Somebody/ someone phoned you yesterday.

Alguien te llamo ayer.

I haven’t bought   you anything.

No te he comprado nada.

Mark hasn’t got anyone to help him.

Mark no tiene a nadie que le ayude.

 

Nobody/ no one, nothing, nowhere se pueden usar al principio de la  oraciones   o bien solas en respuestas cortas.

Nobody came to the meeting. Nadie vino a la reunión.

What have you done today? Nothing.

¿Qué has hecho hoy? Nada.

Where are you going tonight? Nowhere. I have a test tomorrow

¿A dónde vas esta noche? A ningún sitio. Tengo un examen mañana.

Tened en cuenta que no/nothing/nobody/nowhere es lo mismo que : not + any/anything/ anybody/ anywhere

We haven´t got any money= We have no money

No tenemos dinero.

I didn`t do anything = I did nothing

No hice nada.

I didn´t ask anybody = I asked nobody

No le pregunté a nadie.

Como veréis cuando usamos no/ nothing/ nobody  … no usamos el verbo en negativo-

Bueno espero que os sirva de ayuda la explicación y como consejo antes de poneros nerviosos observar las oraciones ver si son afirmativas , negativas , interrogativas , si se trata de sustantivos contables o incontables y a partir de ahí aplicar  las normas.
